Such knowledge may come from education, experience, or both. Experience implies recognized achievements, technical competence, and professional acknowledgment as an authority in the field.
The FDA is often consulted regarding whether a specific individual may be approved as a Process Authority; however, the FDA does not have the legal authority to require processors to obtain FDA pre-approval before hiring an individual or organization to act as their Process Authority.
The FDA may, however, evaluate whether the procedures followed by competent Process Authorities are appropriate for identifying any potential public health hazards.
